Gold Country Wildlife Rescue – Auburn, CA

$10.50 – $12.00 an hour – Part-time

Baby season is starting and we need your help to give the care and attention to our furry and feathered neighbors who need a little assistance to get back on their feet. Working with GCWR is not only a great way to help out animals and our local environment but you’ll get to learn new things and work closely wildlife from our area as we rescue and rehabilitate local orphaned and/or injured wildlife.


Job Summary

MISSION OF ROLE: Responsible for the daily animal care and basic operations of the Wildlife Intake Center (WIC).

REPORTS TO TITLE: Director of Animal Care

Responsibilities and Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

1. Animal Care

  • Examine or supervise examinations of a variety of animals
  • Ensure that all aspects of animal care is completed daily (including but not limited to):
  • Food preparation and care
  • Feeding
  • Wound treatment and cleaning as necessary
  • Administer medications as necessary
  • Cage / enclosure / equipment maintenance and cleaning
  • Laundry
  • Perform lab analyses

2. Operations

  • Ensure that all Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) WIC policies, procedures and protocol are followed
  • Maintain the WIC in a clean, sanitary and professional condition
  • Training and supervision of volunteers as directed by the WIC Manager or Director of Animal Care
  • Assist with inventorying

3. Administrative

  • Interact with the public regarding wildlife issues and patients in a professional manner
  • Maintain intake and care documentation correctly and clearly
  • Work closely with both paid and volunteer staff in a mature, friendly and professional manner
  • Assist with scheduling of volunteers
  • Assist with acceptance of donations, sale of merchandise, dissemination of information on how to become a volunteer


  • Standing – Walking – Sitting for extent of shift
  • Lifting – Standing – walking with up to 25 lbs
  • Bending
  • Exposure to a variety of animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, etc.)
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings and holidays (depending on season and animal intake numbers the WIC is open anywhere from 4-12 hours a day 7 days a week)

Qualifications and Skills



  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years animal care experience


  • Ability to read, write and comprehend documents, including animal care manualswritten in English
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Clear communication skills including both verbal and written (email, text)o Ability to multitask
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide by 10’s and100’s
  • Ability to understand written formula/medication dosing
  • Ability to weigh/record weights in grams
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to act as a self-starter when needed
  • Ability and willingness to follow clear protocols and instruction with the awareness to ask for guidance when unsure about proper procedure


  • Current RVT License
  • 2 years experience in a veterinary hospital
  • Wildlife care experience
  • Non-profit experience
  • Basic team management experience

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $10.50 to $12.00 /hour
